Chapter 46 He Won’t Lose Her Again!

“Shit!” Cedric cursed as he thought of the possibilities. He lit a cigarette as he got into the car,

slamming the door hard.

Baz cowered in fear. He knew very well that Cedric was not a smoker. The only time Cedric had

allowed himself to succumb to alcoholism and cigarettes was when he thought Maia had died. Yet here

he was, smoking again because of her.

“Find out where she is at once!”

He would not allow himself to lose her again.

“Yes, sir.”

Ten minutes later, Cedric got Maia’s exact location.

“Mr. Larkin, Ms. Maia left for Eldertown 20 minutes ago.”

“Eldertown?” Cedric asked slowly.

Baz nodded.

“Get me tickets for Eldertown immediately,” Cedric demanded.

“I’m sorry, but the last train has already left.”

“Are there any other train stations nearby?”

“There’s one, but we’ll have to drive another 290 kilometers to Eldertown. Perhaps we could get tickets

for the first train the next morning?” Baz asked.

“Get me those tickets tonight,” Cedric replied firmly.

“Yes, boss.”

As soon as Cedric finished smoking, he tossed his cigarette into the nearby trash can and drove off into

the night.

away

Baz could only clutch his tablet against his chest as he watched his boss drive As he stood shivering in

the windy night, Baz realized that this was the second time he had been left behind.

The rain started with a drizzle that night before pouring in a torrent. By the time Maia arrived in

Eldertown, it was already 11 p.m.

The night in the small town was awfully quiet. Maia could only hear the rain as she arrived at the only

hotel in town.

was with his timing.

“Hi Ms. Maia, are you all settled in?”

“Yeah, I just got here.”

“I have an update on the information you wanted me to investigate. Jordan grew up at an orphanage.

His background is squeaky clean, and he was an extraordinarily gifted student. He was given a full

scholarship to complete his studies.

“Furthermore, he took part in numerous competitions and won them all. After he graduated, countless

companies tried to get him to work for them.”

“Why did he choose Starlight Entertainment?” Maia was genuinely puzzled by his decision. He

obviously had better options.

“He had an accident and your mother saved him. He shares the same rare blood type as your mother,”

Buck had tried his best to investigate and this was the most likely possibility he

could think about.

Before Maia could question him, Buck continued, “Jordan is also very popular in Eldertown. Not only

does he give his students extracurricular lessons, but he also gives them online lessons for free. He

also has a good relationship with the locals.

“I also discovered that many big corporations approached him right after moving here. They’ve plied

him with many attractive offers, such as a high salary and other work benefits, yet he refused them.

“What’s strange is that these companies then gave up on him very quickly. They didn’t even bother

giving him any counter–offers.”

Buck was puzzled by the companies‘ lack of perseverance. He wasted no time sending the report he

had to Maia.

Maia went through the report and studied the companies that had come looking for Jordan. She was

surprised that about 50 of them approached him within 6 months after he moved to

Eldertown.

Maia was convinced that Jordan must be a rare talent, or these companies would not have wasted their

time and effort seeking him out. However, Buck was right. It was odd that none of them came back, and

no other companies came looking for him in the second half of the year.

Nonetheless, she needed him if Starlight Entertainment were to regain its once glorious past.

“Ms. Maia, Eldertown is a town that relies on tourism. It’s also a gathering hub for people who want to

travel to smaller towns nearby. Eldertown hosts a high volume of small business traders, so you should

be careful. Make sure your windows are locked, especially at night!”

“Don’t worry, Buck. I can take care of myself!”

“Feel free to call me if you need anything! I’ll make sure that nothing happens at the company!” Buck

reassured Maia.

If it were not for the fact that Maia had no one else she could trust to manage the company, Buck would

have followed her to Eldertown.

“Alright.” Maia hung up and went to get ready for bed.

That night, Maia had a hard time going to sleep. She had an unpleasant dream. She dreamt about the

time of the fire. She remembered how much it had hurt when the flames had tried to swallow her.

Maia a wasi

jolted awake by loud thunder. She noticed that she was covered in a cold sweat as she recalled that it

was all just a dream.

Looking at her surroundings, she tried to calm herself by taking deep breaths and mumbling to herself

that it was all in the past.

Moments later, another loud sound echoed throughout the place. Outside the hotel, the wind howled as

rain continued to pour and thunderous noises filled the air.

Maia glanced toward the window. She noticed a tree next to it violently shaking in the wind. She could

almost hear its branches snapping, one after another.

It was already daybreak, but the town was still shrouded in darkness. As a loud clicking sound rang

through the building, all the lights went off.

Maia could hear a commotion outside her room.

“What’s going on? What was that sound?”

“Is the power out?”

“Yup, the power’s out! There’s no power in here!”

One of the hotel employees stood in the corridor and tried to reassure the guests. “Please. don’t panic

and go back to your rooms in an orderly manner. Our building has a backup generator. The power will

be back on soon. For your own safety, please don’t hang around the corridors!”

In the darkness, Maia fumbled for her cell phone. On it, she saw a few emergency alerts.

“A hurricane warning is in effect for this area with dangerous winds and flooding possibilities.

Please beware of fallen objects and evacuate as soon as possible. Follow instructions from

local officials.”

Maia was shocked that a hurricane had just hit the town. The howling sound of the wind made her

shiver in fear. She could also hear the loud noises of billboards falling over.

Maia could not believe how last night’s drizzle could turn into a full–fledged hurricane within just a few

hours. She immediately sent a message informing Buck about her current situation.

To avoid further disruptions, she had to make sure that Buck was briefed about what to do in the time

she was away.

After waiting in the dark for about 30 minutes, the lights came back on. However, Maia knew that the

hotel could only sustain these conditions for a couple of hours before they exhausted all their backup

power. Who knows how long this hurricane would last.

She could only feel her despair grow as she watched trees being uprooted by the wind and the loud

howling sound echoing through her ears.

She was at the mercy of Mother Nature as the hurricane unleashed its full force onto the town.

11 gave way to the bus

Two loud cracks were heard as the windows of her room force. The windows shattered instantly. Mala

could barely stand as the strong wind and rain hit her in the face. Moments later she was blown over.
