Chapter 276 Did You Just Say You Hated Me?

The frost on Lewis’ expression was evident, and his eyes were as icy as glaciers.

“N-No…” As Josephine panted, a syllable stumbled out from her lips.

Quintin’s eyes widened as he stared at Josephine in surprise.

She actually spoke!

Just as Quintin was about to dismiss that as him being delusional in the face of death,

Josephine uttered a few more words, “P-Please… D-Don’t …”

Lewis lowered his gaze and looked at her. Not only did her pleas fail to soften his heart, but they also

fanned the flames of hostility within Lewis.

His knuckles turned white from grasping the dagger. The next second, he tugged Quintin’s hair and

fiercely swung it at him.

“Lewis!” Suddenly, a scream erupted from Josephine’s mouth, exceptionally booming in the storage

room, its echoes ringing in their ears.

Lewis halted, and the pointed end of the dagger stopped less than an inch from Quintin’s neck.

Quintin stared at the dagger, his eyes frozen in place.

He had been immensely close to death twice in two minutes. Twice more, and Lewis wouldn’t have to

dirty his hands-Quintin would die from fright instead.

Just then, Lewis jerked his head backward and looked at Josephine, clinging onto his leg with an iron

grip, her tear-streaked face turned toward him. Her body shook violently because of her sobbing.

Her lips quivered as she slowly uttered, “D-Don’t make me h-hate you…”

Emotions flickered across Lewis”

eyes. “Hate me?”

Josephine was at her wit’s ends. She had no idea what she could do to save Quintin.

She looked pleadingly at Lewis, her hair plastered on her face and dripping wet from her sweat.

She could only beg Lewis for mercy in every way possible.

If Quintin died because of her, she would owe him her life. She would be known as a murderer

-a sinner.

She would be in a living nightmare for the rest of her life and never again attain peace. “Don’t

Lewis reached out and grabbed her chin. “Did you just say you hated me?”

What she had just said dawned on her, and she shook her head vigorously.

Lewis smiled. “You will hate me because of him?”

Josephine’s lips quivered. Her fingers tightened their grip on his pant leg. It seemed she provoked him

further.

Lewis stared at her for a few seconds. Then, he paid no more attention to her and turned to look at

Quintin again, seemingly thinking of ways to make Quintin’s death more insufferable.

Josephine was at a dead end.

In a panic, she clambered up from the floor and used all her might to shove Lewis aside.

She depleted every ounce of energy in her body.

To her utter disbelief, she actually managed to shove him aside as she did earlier.

She watched Lewis take a few steps backward before Conrad caught him.

“Sir…” Conrad had concern written all over his face. He was the only one who noticed Josephine’s

hands had landed on Lewis’ injury.

Only then did Josephine realize Lewis was wearing a hospital gown underneath his trench coat.

A look of agony flitted across Lewis’ face, but it was only for a split second. His killing intent

overwhelmed every other expression.

Josephine gestured, “It’s all my fault. My death should make up for it. Let me atone my sins…

“I

Lewis’ veins bulged as he stared at Josephine’s moving fingers, and a deep chuckle escaped his lips,

sending chills down everyone’s spine.

Fortunately, a group of people entered the storage room at this moment.

It was none other than Damian, accompanied by a team of policemen.

Lewis glanced at the newcomers, and the smile on his lips slowly dissipated.

“Quintin!” Damian saw his son getting held against the floor, which upset him.

Although they were always picking fights with each other, they were still a family. How could he, as a

father, remain calm when he saw the mistreatment his son was receiving?

However, he secretly heaved a sigh of relief when he observed that Quintin had barely any wounds on

his body. He turned and questioned Lewis, “Chairman Alvarez, what is the meaning of this?”

Lewis had regained his composure. He looked aloofly at Damian and said, “It’s nothing more than a

game between your son and me. What’s with all these people you brought, Mr. Fowler?”

Damian would be mad to believe him. If he hadn’t led the police here, Lewis could have gotten rid of

him and Quintin there and then.

“Mr. Quintin, what do you say?” Lewis’ attitude took a 180 degrees turn; he wasn’t as cold as before,

and there was a smile on his face.

As he spoke, the bodyguard holding Quintin down released Quintin. Quintin rose from the ground and

ran to help Jack up.

Quintin turned his icy gaze toward Lewis. “Who on earth would join you in such a game, you lunatic!”

It wasn’t the time for an argument with Lewis. All Quintin could think of was to bring Jack to the

hospital.

Ignoring everyone, Quintin carried Jack and bolted out of the storage room.

Following his exit, the limelight was now on the face-off between Lewis and Damian.

Seeing that his son had fled the scene, Damian was temporarily at a loss on how to confront Lewis. He

actually hoped he wouldn’t have to stand on Lewis’ opposing side if it wasn’t necessary.

“Mr. Fowler, any advice?”

Damian was blue in the face. He took a while before he said, “This punk… Chairman Alvarez, I’m truly

sorry. Quintin had always been a rebellious kid since young. If he had wronged you in any way, please

bear with him. I apologize on his behalf.”

Lewis looked at him with an imperceptible expression as he said, “Your son needs discipline indeed.”

Damian paused before saying, “Naturally, I’ll see to that. I assure you he’ll never cause you any

more trouble.”

“That would be for the best.”

Damian had no reason to stay. He cast an awkward glance at the police he brought. He didn’t want to

make a fuss over this since they were well-acquainted, and Quintin was unharmed. Otherwise, no one

would benefit from it. “That’s that. I’ll leave you to attend to your matters, Chairman Alvarez. I’ll take my

leave.” At that, he exchanged a brief conversation with the police, and they left.

Damian came and went like the wind. It was as though he had never appeared in the first place.

The only proof of the incident that just took place was the blood stains on the ground.

After they left, Conrad signaled to Ellie to leave immediately.

Ellie hurried out.

Josephine stood forlornly, bleeding from the wound on her palm. The crimson blood kept flowing down

her fingers to the floor.

She looked up at Lewis.

Lewis’ gaze was locked on her too. They were both silent.

Emotions that she couldn’t fathom swirled in his eyes. She couldn’t distinguish if those were

disappointment or fury, but his expression was as calm as ever.

“Sir, shall we return home?” Conrad reminded.

Lewis finally looked away and walked out. His shoulders rubbed against Josephine’s as he passed by

her, but he never spared her another glance.

Everyone left. Josephine was the only one left in the storage room, which was full of people until

seconds ago.

The sound of the car driving off alleviated the tension in her. She started gasping for air.

She took some time before dragging her exhausted body out of the storeroom.

The rain had stopped. Josephine looked at the night sky and the puddles on the ground. A breeze froze

her to the core.

Her palm was throbbing with pain. She turned her palm upward and stared at the wound for a few

seconds before allowing her arm to droop back into position limply.

Josephine stood at the door to the storeroom for a long time. Suddenly, she didn’t know where to go.

She now resembled a homeless stray driven to a corner.

Leaning against the wall, she slowly squatted and curled up.

Shortly after, she heard Ellie’s voice and intuitively looked toward the direction of the sound. “She’s

over there. Maybe she’s the one you’re looking for.”
