Mira tucked her chin into her scarf, shaking her head and waving her chubby little hands, "Are ghosts gonna cfor us? I'm super scared of ghosts. | don't wanna be taken away and | don't want Mom to be taken away either." Aurelia wrapped her arms around Mira's small shoulders, "Don't worry, sweetheart. I've had the wizard do a blessing to help any lost souls find peace and move on to their next life. They won't bother you or your mom." As she spoke, Fredric walked in from outside, his face dark with the gloom. He seemed to swallow a sour lemon.
Mira caught one glimpse of him and pulled a face, "Dad seems in a bad mood, huh?" Nina scanned his face, wondering if Aunt Aurelia's words were true. Was her cousin not planning on marrying her dad and becoming their stepmom? "Dad, did you go see Aunt Aurelia's cousin?" she asked.

After giving it a swirl, he then took a big gulp.
He had only recently gotten divorced, back on the single scene, and had charged off to propose to Jelena, only to be rejected.
She had told him she wasn't ready to be tied down by marriage, which would limit her freedom. And she wasn't into him enough to consider living together.
It was like a cold bucket of water dousing his fiery enthusiasm, chilling him to the bone.
He had never felt such a crushing defeat in his life.

"It's written all over your face, man. You obviously struck out at my aunt's," Kane sighed. "I'll tell you my aunt is one of the hardest women to pin down. You getting divorced just meant you were eligible to chase after her. Getting her to marry you is a whole different ball game. There's a guy who's been after her since high school, nearly a decade now, and he's still at it." Fredric was overwhelmed by embarrassment.
This was nothing like he had planned. He thought once he was divorced, Jelena would surely agree to marry him.
They'd been intimate with sex but she wouldn't say yes to his proposal. What was she hesitating for? "Aurelia, let's go to the lounge and talk this through properly." said Fredric.
If anyone knew Jelena's mind, it was Aurelia.
Following him to the lounge, Aurelia listened as he swirled his drink. "Has Jelena said anything to you? Why'd she change her mind about marrying me?" Aurelia shrugged, "Fredric, | think you got it wrong. My cousin never agreed to marry you. She just said she'd consider letting you chase her after your divorce." Fredric broke into a sweat, realizing his misunderstanding.
"Do you think she's been getting close tojust to get back atfor my past with Sheryl? After all, | paid a lot to get a divorce." Aurelia scoffed, "Has she ever made a move on you? Wasn't it you who was always chasing after her, drawn in by her charm?" Fredric shifted awkwardly. Struths didn't need to be spelled out like that.
"I'm serious about Jelena." Aurelia replied, "Fredric, if my cousin hasn't accepted your proposal, it just means you haven't met her standards for a husband yet. If you like her, you'll have to keep trying." Fredric frowned as he said, "What are her standards?" "lI don't know, everyone's different. But | can tell you that women like loyal men. Nobody wants someone who's out there flirting around, being fickle." Fredric pressed his hand to his forehead, "Ever since | met her, I've been on the straight and narrow, working on being a better man."
