Chapter 638 The Painful Aftereffects

Bailey let out a sigh.

What else could be done?

Severe damage was inflicted when the blade scraped the heart.

However, she dared not share her knowledge with Victoria lest she broke down due to her volatile condition.

She hadn't even recovered from her recent miscarriage. After everything that had happened today, her body was

at its limit and could no longer sustain another emotional blow.

“Don't worry. We managed to save him. He should be fine once he's out of critical condition and recuperate for six

months,” she replied as she massaged her forehead wearily.

Victoria continued staring at her blankly and remained unconvinced.

After a drawn-out silence, she grabbed Bailey's arm and hissed, “Bay, don't lie to me. Are our many years of

friendship not enough for you to be honest with me?”

Bailey exhaled. She would have liked to tell her the truth, but Lionel's condition was too awful.

Telling Victoria the truth would likely be her last straw.

Victoria's heart fell at Bailey's silence.

She let go of Bailey's arm and strode toward the operating room.

“I'll ask the other doctors then if you won't be forthcoming with me.”

Bailey turned subconsciously and held on firmly to her arm. “I've managed to secure his life. That's the truth.

What's the point of me lying to you when you'll find out sooner or later?”

Victoria's eyes were bloodshot as she faced Bailey. “He might be alive, but his injuries are grave, causing serious

damage to his body. Am I right?”

Bailey felt listless. She knew how stubborn Victoria could be. She wouldn't back down until she got to the bottom of

things.

Felicity approached them from a short distance away and wrapped her arms around Victoria. “Vicky, you're too

weak. Why don't you follow me back to your ward to get some rest? Bay will explain everything once she has

everything settled.”

Victoria ignored her as she glared at Bailey unflinchingly with her eyes wide open.

Bailey exhaled a heavy breath and addressed Simon and Caridee, who were beside her. “Both of you, help support

your mom to rest in her ward. Her body can't handle this much strain.”

Felicity smiled. “I'm fine with that as well. In that case, I'll go back and have some rest. You two have a good chat

and try talking things over. The friendship both of you have is a precious thing.”

With that, she and her children departed from the emergency room.

Bailey lifted her gaze at Victoria and said in a low voice, “His heart has sustained an injury. There's a saying that it

takes a hundred days for the muscle and bones to recover from trauma, even more so for the heart. Based on my

clinical work, he'll often experience pain in the heart whenever it rains. It's just the same for women who've

undergone a cesarean section. Their wounds will still hurt even after they've recovered. The heart is our most

vulnerable organ. As such, these periodic pains are inevitable. I can't restore him to his former state, no matter

how brilliant I am. That is unless he gets a heart transplant. Unfortunately, the chance of him finding a donor with a

heart that matches his is so slim that it's close to impossible.”

Victoria had begun drifting off toward the end as she knew that having a heart transplant was too far-fetched.

She was instead fixated on what Bailey had said about how Lionel's heart would ache whenever there was rainy

weather.

Is this divine punishment?

Are the heavens teaching us a lesson by sending another disaster when we tried escaping our plight? Is this so we'd

remain trapped in an infinite cycle of torture?

Bailey was about to speak when Victoria waved her off. “Bay, thank you for keeping him alive. Where there's life,

there's hope. Who knows? Perhaps a medication that can cure heart pains will be invented in the future?”

Bailey let out a breath she was holding at Victoria's positivity and grinned. “You're right. With the rapid advances in

the medical field, that could very well be a possibility. That's why you shouldn't be too disheartened.”

“Bailey, I have bad news.” Zayron's voice rang out from the opposite end of the corridor.

Bailey unconsciously furrowed her brows as she'd never seen him beside himself with worry.

This meant that something serious had taken place.

She stalked toward him and grabbed his collar, tugging him into one of the wards. “What happened?”

Zayron answered choppily as he struggled to catch his breath, “Our spies in the Hoffman family reported that Philip

has sniffed out Juliana's lie and now knows that the child she's pregnant with is not Huntley's. He's now coercing Mr.

Raymond to imprison Juliana and Huntley.”

Bailey frowned.

The thing she was most concerned about had finally happened.

She knew that Phillip and his son would take advantage of the situation.

As the best hacker in the world, she knew there was a high risk of the paternity results being tampered with when

using the medical facilities belonging to the family's inner circle.

They would never let Juliana off so easily and would stop at nothing until she was eliminated.

“How are they planning to deal with Juliana?” The rules of the Hoffman family stipulate explicitly that any family

member who has a relationship with an outsider and bears his child would have to be exiled.

Now that Juliana's pregnancy was brought to light, the worst she had to endure would be being exiled from the

family. Were there any consequences more dangerous than that?

Zayron ground his teeth and bit out, “According to our spies' intel, Philip intends to use Julia to set an example. He

proposed to Mr. Raymond that Julia undergo an abortion and be permanently incarcerated in the Hoffman

residence so she never steps foot out again.”

Bailey nodded in satisfaction.

“You're finally taking things seriously for once and have learned how to assess the situation calmly. What about

Zeke? Does he know about this?”

Zayron quirked his lips. “Your mother threatened her own life and ordered him to return to comfort Shirley as she's

been experiencing abdominal pains recently.”

Bailey couldn't hold back her giggle. Waverly didn't show an ounce of concern for the critically injured Lionel despite

being his aunt and only relative, yet focused her attention on an unborn baby that was not the Shurmer family's

flesh and blood.

Bailey mused wryly that Waverly was lucky her life was smooth sailing all this while.

I suppose she'd have to learn the lesson the hard way by my own hand like Felicity.

“Come along. Let's go to the Shurmer residence.”
