Chapter 188

Beatrice leaned closer and whispered in her husband's ear.

Immediately, Clarence shot up from the couch and roared, “No. This is too risky. Lives are at stake

here! If we're discovered in the end, we might end up in jail!”

Beatrice looked up and reminded him, “This is the price we have to pay if we want to be successful.

Artemis might end up marrying someone else if we drag this out. Ronni will get kicked out, and

everything will be too late.”

Clarence quivered at the sound of the outcome.

He had always wanted to get on the Luther family's good side. Seven years ago, his daughter bore

Artemis a child, and that was when Clarence thought she would have the opportunity to marry into the

family.

Alas, Artemis was unmoved despite Rhonda's beauty and all she did, and their wedding ended up

being stalled for a good seven years.

With Artemis turning thirty, it was about time he settled down.

Everyone in Hallsbay will take me as a joke if the person Artemis marries is not Ronni.

When Beatrice noticed her husband wavering, she continued, “Our reputation is not even the main

issue if Ronni gets chased out of the family. What's more unsettling is whether we will be able to

continue staying in Hallsbay in the future. There will be public opinion directed at us.”

Clarence paced up and down around the coffee table about ten times until he finally announced, “All

right. Go ahead with the plan, but make sure you don't go overboard. I don't want you to end up killing

someone.”

“Don't worry. I'm always careful when it comes to Ronni's future.”

Over at the ward in the Luther family, Maxton was lying on the bed as he stared at the ceiling, smiling

foolishly.

Beside him, Bailey observed him with her eyes narrowed.

I know he's mentally unstable, but isn't this a little too much?

The sight of Maxton's current state reminded her of Zayron's words the other day. The boy had told

Bailey in all certainty that Jessica had dirt on Rhonda.

I wonder if Zayron knows something. Don't tell me Max is the one who told him.

An outrageous idea budded in Bailey's mind, and she smirked to herself.

Pulling Max up from the bed, she said, “Max, be a good boy and look into my eyes.”

The child smiled absentmindedly before looking at Bailey's eyes, and they maintained eye contact for

three solid minutes.

Then, Bailey stared deep into his eyes and asked, “What is your name?”

Maxton's pupils constricted as he replied in a daze, “Maxton Luther.”

“How old are you?” Bailey continued.

“Seven.”

“Did you tell Zayron about Jessica knowing something Rhonda did?”

“Yes.”

“How did you know?”

“Rhonda said it herself.”

Ha! This kid has been growing some gut, hasn't he? How dare he trick me?

Bailey flicked her fingers beside Maxton's ear, and the boy instantly snapped out of his stupor.

He was quiet for a moment until he started smiling stupidly again.

Bailey knocked his head so hardly that the blow made him dizzy.

“That's enough. I already saw through your act.”

Maxton stopped laughing immediately.

“W-What did you do to me just now?”

Instead of answering him, Bailey knocked him on the head again. “Do you think this is funny? I wouldn't

have fallen for your trick if I wasn't worried sick!”

Looking at her in confusion, the boy ruffled his hair in annoyance and pouted. “How did you find out?

My acting skills were so good! Even Daddy didn't realize anything.”

“Didn't Zayron tell you that I know how to hypnotize people? I'm really good at it,” she said as she

pinched the boy's cheek, putting on an insincere smile.

“Bay, how could you be so good at everything?” Maxton sighed. “I feel so inferior around you. I bet my

daddy feels the same.”

Bailey rolled her eyes.

No. Your dad does not feel inferior at all. He's so carefree he does anything he wants and takes

advantage of anyone he likes.

“Tell me. Who put this lousy idea in your head?” Bailey interrogated, twisting the boy's ear.

“Use your imagination, Bay. You know how nasty your son is,” Maxton admitted.

Zayron? I knew it! No one else is capable of coming up with such a terrible idea other than him.

Maxton circled his arms around Bailey's and looked at her piteously as he pleaded, “Bay, could you tell

Grandma and Daddy that you've found the cure for my illness? You can give me an injection so I can

act normal again. It's too tiring living like this. I even have to pee and poop in my pants.”

Bailey's face twitched when she finally came to a realization.

Zayron fooled this poor boy. Now that Max finally knows what he has gotten himself into, it's already too

late for him to back out. There's no way Max can admit to Artemis that he's been messing with

everyone all this while. That man would skin him alive if he finds out.

“Bay...” Maxton implored again.

Bailey held back her laughter and patted the boy's cheek. “You can't quit now. You'll have to hang in

there since we still don't know exactly what Rhonda did. Make sure you don't give the whole thing away

now. Your dad will surely beat you up if he finds out.”

Maxton slumped back on the bed in utter dejection. “Zayron had better pray he doesn't end up in my

hands in the future. I'll beat him to a pulp if I see him again.”

After leaving the infirmary, Bailey went back to the Luther residence.

Suddenly, a low voice called out to Bailey while passing by the garden, “Waverly? Is that you?”

She stopped in her tracks.

Waverly? Is someone calling me “Waverly?”

She whipped her head around and looked across the vast garden.

There's no one here, so that person must be talking to me.

She slowly turned around and cast her gaze toward the corner of the corridor where the voice came

from.

It was a middle-aged man in his fifties. Bailey could see traces of Artemis and Simon's features from

his charming and familiar face.

Putting two and two together, she could make an educated guess.

He must be Artemis' father, Maxton's grandpa—Gerald Luther. He is the man in charge here.

“Did you call me, Mr. Luther?”

Gerald walked down the stairs with his gaze glued to her. “Are you related to Waverly?”
