Chapter 157 Why Are You Apologizing to Me Charlene smiled bitterly while the servant cried. “Miss McKinney, your body is so weak, and you

haven’t taken a bite of food for the whole night. How can you possibly be by Miss McKinnon’s side at all

times?

“Mr. Brighthall, this matter is completely unrelated to Miss McKinney. If you wish to put the blame on

someone for not stopping Miss McKinnon, blame me!”

Both of them chimed in with each other in perfect harmony and put on a perfect act.

Brendan relented in the end and suppressed his anger. However, he sounded extremely rigid when he

said, “It’s too cold. You should go back into the house first, Charlene. I’ll drop by tomorrow to see you.”

“Alright…”

Brendan still felt like his head was splitting when he got into the car. His mind was a chaotic mess after

standing in the cold wind for a few short minutes.

He could not withstand the cold, so he could not imagine how a woman who had just recovered from a

severe illness like Deirdre could stand in the cold for so long.

‘Did she torment herself to such a tragic state just to vilify Charlene? For what?

‘If I were to come a little later, it’s possible that Deirdre would be dead…’

At the thought of Deirdre dying, Brendan felt a knot in the pit of his stomach, and his chest was sore

and hurt as if something had exploded in him.

Soon afterward, he was infuriated. ‘Deirdre, why don’t you care a little bit more about your life? Why

aren’t you afraid of dying just because of Sam?”

Given Deirdre’s condition, Brendan figured he would have to send her to the hospital first.

The doctor at the hospital treated her through the night, yet she still had a high fever for two days

before she recovered.

It was already the third day when Deirdre woke up. The moment she opened her eyes, her throat was

so parched that it hurt, yet she did not react much to it.

It was a common thing for her to be admitted to the hospital for illness frequently.

The door suddenly opened just as she was about to get up to get water. The person sounded agitated

and walked at a rushed pace. “Miss McKinnon? When did you wake up? Are you okay?”

Deirdre’s lips trembled when she heard the voice. She said with a dry, hoarse voice, “Sam, is that

you?”

Sam scratched his head and chuckled. “What’s going on, Miss McKinnon? You can’t even recognize

me anymore after I’ve been gone for a few days? You can’t even recognize my voice.”

T

“No…” Deirdre was surprised because she did not expect that Sam’s voice would be the first voice she

heard as soon as she regained consciousness.

She lowered her gaze for a moment and came to realize something. “How is your body? Are you

alright?” Sam rubbed his arm wrapped in a bandage. “I’m fine. I accidentally took two slashes to my

arm, but I dressed my wounds immediately, so it’s already fine.”

“I’m sorry…”

Sam was caught by surprise due to the unexpected apology. “Miss McKinnon, why are you apologizing

to

me?”

She clutched the blanket tightly in her hands and said in a self-mocking tone, “Had you not saved me

from the storeroom the other day, you wouldn’t have been arranged to work in the casino and your

wouldn’t have gotten injured. It was my fault that you got injured.”

A look of astonishment flashed past Sam’s eyes. He had been assigned to work in the casino because

he had feelings for his employer’s woman…

“Has Brendan not revealed it to her yet?”

He felt relieved at that moment. At the very least, his relationship with Deirdre would not grow distant

for the time being if this were the case.

“I’ll still be working there if not for you, Miss McKinnon. If that is the case, why haven’t you taken that

into account?” He chuckled. “Moreover, I wasn’t assigned there because of you but because they were

experiencing a manpower shortage.”

“Really?” Deirdre raised her head in confusion.

Sam nodded and came to realize that Deirdre could not see. He said ‘yes’ and soon afterward, he

became serious. “However, I received some information there by chance. Miss McKinnon, do you still

remember the homeless man that you wanted me to look into previously?”
