Chapter Ninety Six Amber's POV.

As | excused myself from Richard and Bianca, | suddenly felt propelled by urgency and anger. The fact that Kayden had just once again intercepted my happiness and was trying to ruin Richard's family made so furious and also droveto reach out to Antoinette and inquire about the progress of the mission | had entrusted to her.

As | settled on the edge of my bed, my fingers trembled slightly as | dialed Antoinette’s number, tapping my feet continuously on the tiled floor. Since | arrived in Italy, | have been having way too much fun, and | haven't bothered to check in on Antoinette and the mission I had entrusted to her. At a point, | had even forgotten about it because of how immersed | had becin my short vacation.

The first ring of the phone echoed in the silence of the room, unanswered, leaving a sense of unease gnawing at me. Anxious thoughts flitted through my mind as | tried once more. The second ring met with Antoinette’s voice on the other end of the line.

“Long tno hearing from you, boss!” she exclaimed almost immediately after she picked up. “It's been way too long since we last spoke, so why all of a sudden are you calling?” Ignoring her pleasantries, | cut straight to the chase. “Antoinette, | need to know how far along your are with the task | gave you. Have you made any progress with Anthony Black?” | queried, trying not to show that | was a little desperate at this point.

There was a long pause on the other end of the line, and tension was building inas | held my breath.

Antoinette’s voice, when it came, held a note of curiosity. “Is there a reason for the rush, Amber?” “I wouldn't ask if there wasn’t a reason, Candy. | don’t know how far you've gone, but | need the evidence against Anthony as soon as possible. | no longer have any tto waste,” | replied.

Antoinette’s response was swift. Don’t worry, Amber. I'm on the cusp of a breakthrough. He almost hita while ago, but I'm guessing he’s still trying to control himself a bit. Since you need it so urgently. I'll work on provoking him a little more, and I'll have the evidence you need soon,” she assured me.

“Just remember to be as caref Ad skipped go too far. Remember, if it gets bad, they're men secretly following you to protect you. Just hit the emergency button, and G 11 Chapter Ninety Six - Up to 30% off they'll be quick to cin and save you,” | reminded her again, not wanting a situation where Anthony, with his psychopathic tendencies, would end up hurting her to the point of killing her.

| didn’t think he would go that far, but regardless, | had to take precautions just in case.

“| can take care of myself, Amber. Now, if you'll excuse me, | need to prepare to meet that man in a few hours.

Hopefully, | can be done with this today and get it over with,” she responded in her usual nonchalant tone.

“Alright. Good luck,” | said before hanging up.

As | hung up the phone with Antoinette, a wave of frustration washed over me, mingling with the feeling of anticipation that clung tolike a shroud.

The mission to secure evidence against Anthony Black was the only thing on my mind now, besides th situation with Richard's father. | desperately wanted to teach Kayden a lesson, and every other plan I had in mind, which I paused before coming here, started to resurface in my mind.

Running a hand through my hair in a gesture of restless agitation, | was interrupted by the shrill beep of my phone, signaling a new notification.

Curiosity piqued, and | reached for my phone and unlocked the screen to reveal a message from the cop who had assistedin putting Alison behind bars. The unexpected communication leftpuzzled, wondering what more he could possibly want fromafter our past dealings.

Opening the message with a sense of trepidation, | scanned through the previous messages | had missed. | didn’t realize that he had senta message two days prior, and | was even more confused as to why he would be textingso often.

My eyes widened in shock as | read the first message he had sent. The words on the screen blurred for a moment before coming into sharp focus, delivering a blow that leftreeling. Alison had been released on bail. The realization hitlike a ton of bricks, my mind struggling to comprehend how someone as despicable as her could have been left to walk free.

| couldn’t understand what was happening and how she had even gotten the chance to be bailed out i the first place, even after | had used the Colonel's connection to put her there in the first place.

With trembling fingers. | scrolled through the subsequent message from the cop, my heart racing in my chest as | suddenly felt a sense of loss. The words | read next strucklike a bolt of lightning.

searing throughwith a terrible finality.

Alison was found dead in her apartment, and apparently, she had committed suicide.

The news hitlike a physical blow, the air escaping my lungs in a gasp of disbelief. It made absolutely no sense tothat someone like Alison would kill herself, and the news just madefeel loads of conflicting emotions like shock, anger, and, strangely, sadness.

Questions raced through my mind, and | couldn’t help but find it weird that this would happen despite the fact that she had been released. Was her death really a suicide, or was there something more sinister at play here? Was it possible that someone had killed Alison, or did she kill herself, and if she did kill herself, would it be because of me? | wondered internally, suddenly realizing that there was a possibility that | drove Alison to commit suicide.
