Chapter 258 "Excuse me. Make way, please," I naturally said as I walked toward them.

Chris stayed motionless and locked his gaze on me, while Jewel simply glanced atbefore making way. When I walked past them, I saw her grabbing his wrist as though afraid he would cafter me. "Con, Maddie. Let's dig in." When I entered the room, enthusiastically welcomed me.

Bree I took my seat and feigned ignorance, asking, "Why is it just us left, Bree?" "It was supposed to be just us, but speople had to butt in." Bree was visibly contemptuous toward Chris and Jewel.

I snickered. "That'd only make things awkward between you and Chris, Bree." I wasn't trying to act like a saint. I simply wanted them to live harmoniously as a family because Zack and Bree had been showeringwith much love and care for as long as I could remember.

"He did it all to himself." Bree didn't intend to take the high road.

I stopped at my kind reminder since it wasn't my place to say anything else. As such, I diverted my attention to the delicacies before me.

"What took you so long at the washroom?" Bree asked.

"I ran into Brandon," I replied honestly.

She was slightly startled but quickly joked, "Did he follow you here so you wouldn't get abducted?" "No. He chere for a meal with his superior." I decided to be vague.

Bree placed more food before me. "Maddie, I'm sure Brandon is a nice guy with great attributes, and I promise you that Zack and I trust you with him. It's just that..." She had difficulty expressing herself, but I got the gist. "You think he doesn't have a great family background, right?" "That's right. Zack and I wouldn't want you to suffer. It's extremely difficult to live a life worrying about money every day," she lamented.

I understood Bree's concern as she had experienced it firsthand. Gildon Corporation wasn't scentury-old business, but rather the result of her and Zack's blood, sweat, and tears.

The couple had been through countless entrepreneurial hardships during their early years but never mentioned it. It was Chris who had toldabout them.

According to him, their family of five, including his grandma at that time, depended on Zack alone to feed the family. As such, it was common for them to be in dire straits.

Their house consisted of only two rooms, one belonging to Zack and Bree and the other to Chris and his grandma.

Bree beca housewife, while Zack becthe sole breadwinner. His earnings were barely enough to cover their monthly expenses, often running out before the next paycheck cin. Faced with that struggle, Bree took up jobs and endured many grievances.

As I recalled those stories, I couldn't help but ask, "Were you and Zack struggling before you established Gildon Corporation?" "We were very much, but I'd prefer not to recall that period." She shook her head while saying that.

People often said to reflect on hardships to appreciate the good in the bad but sstruggles were too painful for one to look back on.

I gazed at her. "Is that why you two started the business? Because it wa el getting overwhelming?" "Yes, but it's also fate." Bree smiled faintly.

"You're right. My parents cto Hilcord to start up a business, but... * I trailed off.

Upon hearing that, Bree instantly pattedon the shoulder. "We're not ΟΠ talking about this. Let's not bring up the past and instead focus on the future." However, I shook my head. "Bree, were you there at my parents' crash? Did something go wrong with the car, or was it a collision ?" X
