Chapter 707

Avery’s face was visibly frosty, his eyes a tempest of deep–seated rage, swirling with crimson fury.

The scandal of the Chambers Group from years past had been unveiled by Matthew.

Even if it meant tarnishing the family’s reputation, he was determined to humiliate Avery and his mother, to stir Jeff’s disdain for them, to ensure that this so–called Mrs. Chambers would remain forever despised as a harlot!

The onlookers was in an uproar, eager to witness the commotion over and above their shock – after all, who wouldn’t be interested in the secrets of the wealthy?

“Oh my, what exactly does Matthew mean by that?”

“It sounds as if Mrs. Chambers has betrayed Jeff in some way?”

“I remember now!”

Someone in the crowd recollected, “Years ago, there was a tabloid expose about Mrs. Chambers having an affair. It claimed that Jeff caught her in the act that she was exiled abroad.”

The crowd was shocked, “Caught in the act?!”

“Back then, the Internet wasn’t as widespread, it was all in the newspapers and magazines. The story vanished from the public eye within less than twenty–four hours after being exposed! All the magazines reporting it disappeared from the market, and the magazine that first broke the news shut down. Looking back, it must’ve been Mr. Jeff’s action to avoid shame!”

“Doesn’t that just prove that Mrs. Chambers really cuckolded Jeff?!”

Evadne watched Mrs. Chambers with a complex gaze, whose face was pale with fear and bewilderment.

Due to her father’s close relationship with Jeff, she had frequented the Chambers‘ residence since childhood.

In her memory, Mrs. Chambers had always been kind and subdued. Given her modest background and marrying into the Chambers family with three unruly stepchildren, the role of stepmother must have been incredibly difficult.

Yet, she had been nothing but kind to the Chambers children and utterly devoted to Jeff, filled with love. Even as a child, Evadne could see the genuine love Mrs. Chambers had for Jeff. How could she have forsaken a good life to have an affair?

Even as an outsider, Evadne was inclined to trust Mrs. Chambers more, yet when the scandal broke, Jeff refused to listen to Mrs. Chambers‘ explanation, cruelly and heartlessly casting her and her son out of the Chambers family.

It was clear that the Chambers Group was cold and callous by nature.

Growing up in such an unfeeling family had led the Chambers‘ offspring to engage in constant backstabbing and deceit among themselves!

“Evadne,” Thaddeus whispered close to her ear, his voicé deep and serious, “Avery brought his mother here tonight to demand justice from the Chambers family.”

“Anyone would seek revenge for such wrongs.”

Although Evadne loathed Avery, she felt a pang of sympathy for Mrs. Chambers and shook her head, “But Mrs. Chambers is too fragile for this. Forcing her into the spotlight tonight in such an extreme manner, subjecting her to harsh words and scrutiny, will only worsen her condition, perhaps even leading to a mental breakdown. It’s not fair to Mrs. Chambers!”

Marilla, standing beside her, nodded in agreement to Evadne’s words, “Just look at Mrs. Chambers. She looks so pained. If it were my own mother, I wouldn’t ask for anything more than her health and happiness.”

“Sweetheart, you’re too kind–hearted.”

Jareth pinched his wife’s cheek and pulled her into his embrace, “But remember, not everyone has humanity, not everyone has a conscience. Like that guy with the glasses–he might look decent, but he’s nothing but a vile creature disguised as a person. I know you stood up tonight to defend Evadne, but from now on, remember to stay away from him. Got it?”

Marilla’s lashes fiuttered, and she quickly nodded, “Um, got it.”

“Good girl.” Jareth planted a searing kiss on her forehead.

Yet, his eyes betrayed his deep concerns.

Recalling the eene look Avery had given Marilla, he felt a chill run through him.

“Ave! Ave! I want to go home. I don’t want to be here. Can we please go home?” Mrs. Chambers clung to Avery’s waist, pleading like a child.

“Mom, just a little longer. We’ll go home after taking the family photo.” Avery said gently, his hands on his mother’s shoulders. “A family photo? Avery, are you joking?”

Matthew sneered contemptuously, looking at Mrs. Chambers with disgust, “Your mother is sick, and you drag her here to make a spectacle. Isn’t it just to gain pity?

No matter how much sympathy you seek, your mother’s betrayal and her scandalous past are indelible stains. Originally, out of respect for their marriage, Dad suppressed the matter to spare your mother some dignity. What are you doing bringing this woman here today, to shame Dad intentionally?”

The crowd was stunned.

“Matthew, that’s enough!”

Jeff’s face turned ashen, and his gaze on Avery was icy, “Avery, take her away now!”

“No.” Avery’s expression was steely.

Jeff exploded with rage, his teeth gritted, “Avery!”

“Matthew, do you dare to swear?”

Avery’s gaze was dark and unrelenting as he fixed it on Matthew’s smug expression, “Can you swear that the so–called affair, my mother’s supposed rendezvous with her lover, dad personally leading a raid to catch them in a hotel, had nothing to do with you?”
