Chapter 247
A powerful retort from Evadne made Cedric feel as though his mask of pretense was ripped off,
exposing the shameful title of an ungrateful man hovering over his
head
Evadne thought, “Wishing to distance yourself from the Ashbournes, are you? Alright. But I will make
sure to stir the pot. Your secrets hidden in the dark, I’ll drag them out into the light!”
Cedric’s lips tightened, his face still adorned with a smile, but his gaze on Evadne held no trace of
mirth.
Instead, it held an icy chill.
Was this the woman Jason was head over heels in love with? Pampered, arrogant, sharp–tongued!
To bring such a troublesome woman into the Dempsey household would only cause chaos. Peaceful
days would be a thing of the past!
The atmosphere became tense and awkward.
Frederic thought Evadne was nothing short of a disaster. Every time she appeared, a storm was sure to
follow!
Cedric’s abilities as a lawyer were undisputed, and Frederic had always wanted him on his side. But he
didn’t know about this connection between him and the Ashboumes, which made him uncomfortable.
“So, Mr. Cedric has a hidden past with the Ashbourne family.”
Thaddeus’s words were directed at Cedric, but his deep gaze never left Evadne, “So, it appears that
Ms. Evadne is the daughter of your family’s benefactor. Is this how you repay her kindness, Mr.
Cedric?”
Evadne frowned, countering his words.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtWas he defending her? Taking sides with her, an outsider, in front of his own family?
When they were married, he never stood up for her. Was he now playing the good guy?
Absolutely not!
Upon hearing this, Hamilton frowned more seriously.
“Well, Ms. Evadne, by your words, are you suggesting that because the Dempseys have received
kindness from the Ashbournes, I should give up my career as a lawyer?”
Cedric would not allow himself to be mocked. He replied, his smile strained, “I am a professional
lawyer. In my eyes, there are only two types of people: clients and non–clients. Miss Glynnis is my
client, and I am bound to serve her to the best of my abilities. This is unquestionable, isn’t it? If you
were to hire me to represent you in court, I would fulfill my duty just the same. This has nothing to do
with whether I repay kindness or not.”
As Thaddeus watched Cedric’s smug expression, his eyes darkened, his fists clenched.
“Oh, I dare not hire you, Mr. Cedric!”
Evadne waved her hands in mock fear, “Such a powerful lawyer like you is a double–edged sword.
Today you help me fight others, but will you turn around and fight
me tomorrow?”
Touching her own cheek, she continued, “After all, you don’t even show courtesy to your own father’s
lifesaver. What am I in your eyes? When you switch sides, wouldn’t you ruthlessly go after me? I dare
not to hire a lawyer tike you.”
She was on par with Acacia at her peak, wasn’t she?
Watching Evadne’s innocent yet cunning face, Thaddeus couldn’t help but smile.
Cedric coughed uncomfortably, anger flaring in his chest.
Glynnis had planned to mock Evadne in her own territory, taking advantage of Jim’s presence to vent
her anger.
But after Evadne’s fiery words, even Cedric was defeated. She dared not provoke Evadne any further,
hiding behind Elspeth like a timid turtle.
“Grandpa!”
Evadne took the frail hand of Hamilton, her eyes full of concern. She seemed closer to Hamilton than
his own granddaughter, Glynnis, “Did you call me over because you’re not feeling well?”
“Don’t worry, child. I’m fine.”
Hamilton gently patted her hand, looking into her clear eyes, “I’m okay. I’m quite healthy.”
Evadne breathed a sigh of relief, “That’s good.”
“lana, the reason (called you here is nothing serious. Firstly, I missed you. I wanted to see you.
Secondly I wanted to ask about the issue between you and Glynnis. What exactly happened? Why is it
such a big deal?”
Hamilton spoke solemnly, “You and Glynnis are both my precious granddaughters. I hope you both are
well. All this drama makes me feel uneasy.”
But Evadne understood. Hamilton was trying to stand up for his own granddaughter.
A wave of sadness washed over her, a lump formed in her throat.
No matter how good she was to Hamilton, she couldn’t compete with his real granddaughter
Even if his dear granddaughter was a villain, always stabbing her in the back.
Dad, Glynnis was suffering so much during those two days in the police station!”
Elspeth held the sobbing Glynnis, choking on her words, “They interrogated her around the clock,
threatening and scolding her, not allowing her to sleep! Look, she’s been tormented to the point of
being unrecognizable!”
Glynnis did look haggard, her pitiful expression only added to her state.

did she visit him as frequently as Evadne did after she grew

But Glynnis was his real granddaughter. As an old man, he hoped for a harmonious family and a
peaceful life.
Thaddeus noticed Evadne’s reddening eyes, her spirited demeanor fading. He felt a pang of distress.
She was clearly wronged.
He suddenly remembered her years of marriage to him in this family. She had always been treated like
an outsider.
Back then, he hadn’t known how to cherish her. In fact, he even wished she would recognize the
difficulty and back down, taking the initiative to ask him for a divorce.
Now, it was as if that scene was playing out again.
But Thaddeus had made that mistake once, and he was determined not to make it a second time!
With a stern expression, his deep brown eyes flashed with slight anger, and he strode forcefully up to
the old man.
The next moment, everyone was stunned!
Thaddeus lifted his arm, naturally draping it over Evadne’s slim shoulders, pulling her forcefully into his
arms.
It was as if she had always been his, and they had never divorced!
Evadne’s beautiful eyes widened, her blood seemingly freezing.
“Thaddeus?”
“Grandpa.”
He didn’t give her a chance to struggle, his large hand gripping her rounded shoulder, his fingers slowly
tightening with force. “Instead of asking Ms. Evadne what happened, why not ask your beloved
granddaughter, Glynnis, what she has been up to?”
