“Grandpa, it’s me.”

She sounded hesitant, for she was not used to calling him that.

Despite that, Wilfred was still overjoyed when he heard the way she addressed him, so much so that his spirits were

immediately lifted.

“It’s good that you’re here. I’m glad. Thank you for coming.”

“I’m sorry I’m late. I wanted to visit you when you got admitted to the hospital, but Joseline wouldn’t let me in, so I

could only find another opportunity to slip in.”

When Wilfred heard that, he heaved a huge sigh before saying apologetically, “That’s just how she is. I’m sorry for

everything you’ve been through.”

A hint of hatred appeared in Angeline’s eyes at the mention of Joseline. She couldn’t bring herself to forgive

Joseline, so she changed the topic.

“Grandpa, why don’t I bring you to the balcony to get some fresh air?”

“Okay. It’s been a while since I got some sunlight.” Wilfred cracked a rare smile.

At his consent, Angeline held his arm and helped him sit up in bed.

Just then, Floretta walked in with a pair of sandals in her hands. With a soft and adorable voice as warm as the

sunlight in spring, she said, “Old Mr. Sorelle, put on some shoes so you can keep your feet warm.”

A look of shock lined Wilfred’s face as he heard that, and soon, he broke out into a wide smile.

“Oh, it’s you, Floretta. I didn’t expect to see you again.”

Instead of approaching him, Floretta merely smiled sweetly at him and replied in a cheerful voice, “Old Mr. Sorelle,

if you want to see me, I can always ask Angel to bring me here.”

“That would be great! I’d love for you to come often, but I don’t think I have much time left.”

Upon finishing his sentence, he was overwhelmed by immense sorrow. He began coughing violently despite only

speaking briefly.

Seeing that, Angeline quickly helped him to the balcony and sat him down on a couch.

“Grandpa, you’re terribly ill, so you have to take good care of yourself. Didn’t anyone come to look after you?”

Wilfred shook his head and let out a long sigh. With a helpless and world-weary voice, he explained, “I’ve been

unconscious for the past few days, so I don’t know what happened. All I remember is that a nurse would bring me

my meals and medication every day. Other than that, I’m on my own most of the time.”

“What about Joseline? Doesn’t she come?”

“I guess she’s busy. She had also sent everyone away, saying that she didn’t want anyone to disturb me,” Wilfred

answered. Although it seemed like he was explaining on her behalf, it was not hard to discern the disappointment

on his face.

As his unfocused eyes lingered on the scenery outside the window, a gentle breeze brushed the hairs on his face,

stinging his eyes in the process. In a daze, he slowly teared up.

“Josie’s baby is having his welcoming party soon, right? I’ve never seen that child before, but I’ve got him a gold

locket. I don’t know how to pass it to them though.”

Angeline’s eyes reddened at Wilfred’s musings, and complicated thoughts swirled in her mind.

Grandpa’s love for Joseline really knows no bounds. He’s still thinking of her at the very end of his life. How does

Joseline have the nerve to harm him when he cares so much for her?

“Grandpa, have some oatmeal. It helps you digest better.”

Tamping down her desire to tell Wilfred the truth, Angeline poured some oatmeal into a bowl and handed it to the

old man.

Though Wilfred was weak due to his illness, he still picked up the spoon and ate the oatmeal. He was touched, for

Angeline had made it specially for him.

Upon finishing the warm oatmeal, Wilfred felt a lot better. His complexion improved, and his face was no longer as

pale.

Angeline noticed a pile of dirty laundry on the couch and thought of dealing with it since she was free. If I don’t tend

to it, who knows how long it’ll just sit there?

At that thought, Angeline asked Floretta to spend some time with Wilfred in the ward before carrying the laundry to

the laundry room.

After half an hour of washing the clothes, she stepped out of the room with the clean clothes in a basket. As soon as

she reached Wilfred’s ward, she saw Liam heading toward her.

“Angeline, have you come to visit your grandpa?”

With both his hands in his pockets, Liam looked at her and flashed her a faint smile.

Angeline stopped in her tracks and engaged in a conversation with Liam.

“Yeah. Are you on your rounds? It must be tiring.”

“Oh, not at all. This is part of my job. Anyway, how’s Old Mr. Sorelle’s health recently?”

“Well, I don’t know why but Joseline sent everyone away. How could Grandpa get any better without anyone caring

for him?”

Again, a hint of hatred surfaced in Angeline’s unfathomable gaze.

Liam patted her shoulder and sighed. After pondering, he spoke. “I know the situation in your family is complicated,

so I shouldn’t say anything at this point to make things worse, but there’s something you should know.”

“What is it?”

“I think someone is investigating us.”

Meanwhile, Wilfred was helping Floretta stack the toy blocks she had brought over from school. While he was at it,

a block accidentally slipped from his hand and fell to the ground.

A crisp noise was heard when the block hit the floor.

Wilfred creased his brows and bent over to feel where the block had fallen because he couldn’t see.

Unknowingly, he reached the door and overheard the exchange between Angeline and Liam.

“Are you saying Joseline is investigating us behind our backs? Does she already know I’ve taken Old Mr. Sorelle’s

medication for testing?”

“I’m afraid so. When I realized what had happened, I was too late. I noticed that the lab report of his medication

had already been tampered with.”

Liam looked at her worriedly, and his tone became increasingly solemn.

“I’m worried about you, Angeline. Since Joseline had no qualms about killing your parents and tampering with your

grandfather’s medication, there is no doubt she will go after you, too,” he continued.

As she heard that, Angeline tightened her grip on the basket handle, and cold sweat drenched her back.

“Thank you for telling me these, Dr. Kingsley.”

Even though she sounded relatively calm, the panic in her eyes betrayed her true feelings.

After all, she was human. Humans would naturally fear death.

Although she had already prepared herself for Joseline’s nefarious measures, she still felt uneasy. She feared that

she would end up like her parents.

Moreover, Wilfred was dying. If she fell for Joseline’s schemes, no one would be able to seek justice for the Sorelle

family.

Amidst her contemplation, she heard a loud thud of something heavy falling to the ground followed by Floretta’s

anxious screams coming from the ward.

“Old Mr. Sorelle! Are you okay? Please wake up!”

In an instant, Angeline’s eyes widened in shock. Her heart lurched as she rushed into the room with Liam.

The first thing she saw when she entered the room was Wilfred sprawling on the cold floor near the door,

unconscious.

Fortunately, Liam had a stethoscope with him. After helping Wilfred up from the ground, he checked the old man’s

condition.
