Idris was still on the line, full of questions, but | cut him off mid-sentence and bolted from the old manor.
| needed to get back to the Scotts’ place and change. | could not let him seelike this as it would only worry him more.
The Scotts.
Before | could even step into the yard, | caught sight of Mom and Maxwell peeling out of the driveway in a frenzy.
Desperate to know what was up, | tried to flag them down, but their car zipped away too fast, leavingwithout answers.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtWith no other choice, | headed back inside to change. My top priority was getting to the hospital to fill Idris in on Officer Jackson's death and the whole Lucas ordeal.
| was practically gasping for air as | rushed to the hospital.
| had just stepped into the lobby when my phone buzzed. Assuming it was Idris, | did not even check the screen before answering, "I'm right outside the hospital." "Yvette, it's me!" That voice | knew all too well sent a shiver down my spine. Surrounded by people as | was, | might have just chucked my phone in a panic if the setting had been different.
| forced a calm | did not feel and responded, "Charlie." From the other end, a soft chuckle teased through the line, "Yep, it's me." | was fighting back a tidal wave of fear, trying to sound casual, "What's up? Why are you calling?" Silence on the line. Then, that svoice that sent chills throughwas suddenly right behind me, "Oh, nothing big. | just wanted to see you." My grip failed me, and my phone clattered to the floor, breaking.
| could not bring myself to look back or to run. Shaking, | crouched down and started to pick up the broken pieces of my phone, my heart racing.
In the blink of an eye, someone had grabbed my hand, and a towering presence shielded me. | tried to yank my hand away on instinct, yet it was no use.
| could feel his eyes on me, takingin. Even though | was too scared to look at him, part ofwas desperately hoping he was not Lucas. Maybe they were just related somehow.
"Are you scared of me?" His voice floated down, and | shivered as he gently tilted my chin up, forcingto look at him.
The face beforewas not Lucas's, and the realization was like a punch to the gut. | could hardly breathe. "No, I'm... not scared." My voice was barely a whisper as | stared at him, a storm of emotions whirling inside me.
He gave a small, dazzling smile, his eyes twinkling with a hint of amusement.
He helpedto my feet, his grip firm on my hand. "Yvette, what's on your mind?" he asked, peering into my eyes.
| bit my lip, keeping silent. | knew that all | had to do was ask if he was Lucas, and | would have my answer. If | did, however, would he really letgo that easily? Officer Jackson was dead.

How would he do it? We were in a hospital. If | screamed for help now, could | possibly have a chance? "Con. Being in the hospital on New Year's Eve is bad luck," he said, his hand at my waist guidingtoward the exit. | planted my feet, refusing to budge.
| looked at him, my mind racing for a way out.
He chuckled as if he could read my thoughts, his gorgeous eyes narrowing. "Relax, I'm not going to let you die." | froze. That was all the confirmation | needed. | did not even have to ask. He was definitely Lucas.
"Help!" | barely got a word out before my mouth was clamped shut, silencinginstantly.
He heldtight against him, his voice a chilling whisper, "Yvette, if you're keen on taking everyone down with you, then go ahead and scream. To me, their lives are as insignificant as ants." My eyes caught sight of Inch, not far off, clutching a timer. My heart lurched, and the word 'bomb’ flashed through my mind.
| stared at him, shocked. How could he take such a risk? His gaze met mine, unfazed, and he challenged me, "So, what's it going to be? Are you going to play nice, or will we go out with a bang?" | could not match his level of crazy.
Thus, I chose silence.
He relaxed his grip when he saw | had quieted down. However, his hand remained locked around my waist. He shota mocking look. "Eager to see Idris, are you?" | kept my mouth shut.
He smirked and, with a firm grip on my waist, steeredinto the hospital elevator. | had no clue what he was planning. | squirmed, frowning at him. "What are you up to?" The elevator doors slid shut, and he gavea sidelong glance, then said icily, "You wanted to see him, right? I'm taking you to him. Let's see what your beloved is up to, shall we?"
