Chapter 829 Simeon tilted his head, with a perfectly trimmed chestnut hair covering his deep eyes and sharp lips. A wild charm was hidden behind the slight curve of his lips. His smooth and fair face had distinct features that were shockingly handsome. He wore an elegant black suit from a high-end brand, which made him look even more charming.
As he felt Sylvia's gaze on him, their eyes met. Simeon's smile widened gradually, and his bright eyes seemed to sparkle.
Franklin frowned slightly at how good-looking this man was and how he was even flirting with Sylvia.
He looked displeased as he turned to Simeon and coldly pushed Sylvia's head towards him while speaking in a low magnetic voice, "lI am more handsome." Sylvia remained silent as she thought about how possessive Franklin could be sometimes.
Meanwhile, Mr. Mcguire called out again for the painting auctioning off at six million dollars. The room fell silent as no one else bid any higher until Simeon raised the paddle once again adding another million to it making it seven million dollars.
Mr. Mcguire became frustrated at why Simeon kept competing against him when he was just a small celebrity who did not have much wealth compared to himself? His face turned dark with anger but couldn't do anything about it right now because of the auction rules - highest bidder wins! The auctioneer noticed something strange happening in the room but continued explaining why this painting of Phoenix was worth so much money.
Mr. Mcguire still stared intently at the painting with an icy expression on his face while Katie asked her father if there were any other things besides peony flowers in this picture because she found it eerie somehow.
She didn't know much about art but felt like there was something unusual about this piece compared to others she had seen before, almost like it wasn't painted on ordinary paper...
Mr. Mcguire spoke in a gloomy tone, "Mr. Tyrell instructed me to get this painting at all costs. | can't afford to fail, no matter how much it costs.” So he raised his sign coldly and announced, "10 million!" Simeon sat elegantly in his seat with a calm expression on his face. He didn't seem bothered by Mr. Mcguire suddenly raising the price to 10 million.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtHe just smirked slightly and said, "11 million." "Do you see anything special about this painting?" Weston whispered to Sylvia. " "A maze," Sylvia replied coldly, a hint of chill flashing through her eyes.
This painting wasn't made within the last two years or even twenty years ago... which meant that Phoenix didn't die twenty years ago like everyone thought she did. She could still be alive now.
A surge of heat rose up in Sylvia's chest at the thought of Phoenix being alive.
She had to have this painting.
Looking at the delicate layer of paper, she suddenly raised her paddle and declared boldly, "20 million." Weston was shocked! Everyone was shocked! They couldn't believe what they were seeing from Sylvia.
Weston grabbed Sylvia's arm frantically and exclaimed, "Miss Andrews! Are you crazy? 20 million for that? Aren't you a master painter yourself?" Franklin furrowed his brow as well. "What exactly is so special about this painting?" he asked.
"It's a map of a maze," Sylvia explained as she gazed upon the old-looking artwork. "But we need to slowly unravel its mysteries." Simeon hadn't expected that Sylvia would also want this piece; he arched an eyebrow but then realized that it wouldn't make any difference whether she got it or if he did — either way they'd end up with the same result — so he decided not to raise his paddle again.
Meanwhile Mr. Mcguire was fuming; was this piece really worth 20 million? He almost felt like losing control but knew better than going against Mr. Tyrell's wishes.
He gritted his teeth and held up his paddle once more - impulsively adding another half-million - bringing it up to 25 million! The entire room erupted into chaos.
"Is Mr. Mcguire going broke over here?" "Ever since his son got detained by authorities, the Mcguire Group has been facing financial crisis; if Carolyn hadn't been supporting them all along, they'd probably have been down already." "Carolyn's been working hard for the entire Mcguire family, but Katie went off to become an actress in the entertainment industry.
It's really ironic." "Yeah, yeah, it's true that whoever is younger gets favored in wealthy families." "It's too cruel. Every time | think about Lukas being out there in danger, my heart doesn't feel good." Everyone was discussing this matter fervently and some of it even reached Mr. Mcguire's ears.
He turned pale then red with anger.
These people have no shame! Why are they discussing his and his son's affairs here? He wasn't happy that his son was being held captive either but what could he do? His son sacrificed himself for the country; even if he died, it would be a sacrifice for the nation.
The President wouldn't dare mistreat the Mcguire family, right? Mr. Mcguire thought irritably to himself.
Last time, Carolyn , as his daughter-in-law, slapped him in public by going over to Cody for dinner, which made him very angry.
For quite some time after that incident, he didn't pay much attention to Carolyn.
Carolyn was smart enough though; she managed the Mcguire Group well, which made him somewhat satisfied.
Thinking about this now made him silently stare at Sylvia. 25 million wasn't just a small amount of money.
He didn't believe Sylvia could come up with an even higher price than that.
Just as he secretly felt pleased with himself, Sylvia raised her paddle once more. "30 million." "What?" He looked shocked; almost unable to believe what just happened, "What exactly do you want?" He glared at Sylvia, almost infuriated not caring about how he looked now.
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏm"Mr. Mcguire," Sylvia smiled slyly while looking calmly back at him, "This is an auction house where highest bidder wins." Weston felt embarrassed now, "Miss Andrews, if | knew you wanted this painting so badly, | wouldn't have put it up for auction. | would've just given it directly to you instead." This painting was something Weston had obtained by chance recently.
"$30 million going once!" "$30 million going twice!" The auctioneer announced loudly from atop the platform as they were nearing completion.
Mr. Mcguire interrupted with a red face, "33 million!" Sylvia continued expressionlessly, "35 million!" They had reached 35 million and Mr. Mcguire couldn't add any more. He gritted his teeth and glared at Sylvia. Why did this woman have to compete with him? Tyrell instructed him to get this painting, but how could he come up with 35 million now? As he hesitated, suddenly a magnetic male voice sounded deeply, "50 million!" He turned pale and stared at the man who spoke.
Franklin! "50 million once!" "50 million twice!" "50 million three times!" "Well done! Sold for 50 million." As soon as the auctioneer finished speaking, a staff member walked towards Franklin with a POS machine for payment. "Mr.
Maskelyne, would you like to swipe the card?" Franklin replied in a deep voice, "Swipe the card.” Jasper immediately took out his bank card and helped complete the transaction.
Mr. Mcguire sat down in shock. Fifty-million dollars! Why did Franklin buy that worthless painting for so much money? Katie was also surprised by her father's defeat.
It seemed like everyone's eyes were on them both.
Katie felt uneasy sitting there; she felt embarrassed and annoyed all at once. She had never felt so exposed before in her life - it was like someone had stripped off all her clothes and left her naked on the street for everyone to see.
She didn't want to feel like this ever again.
Why did Franklin spoil Sylvia so much? Why did he spend fifty-million dollars on that painting just for her? It was infuriating! And why didn't Brayden pay any attention to Katie even though she was famous too? Everywhere she went people talked about Carolyn - they said how amazing she was... why couldn't anyone say that about Katie instead of ignoring her completely? Mr. Mcguire trembled with anger; he grabbed Katie's hand tightly, "Let's go." He couldn't stay here anymore - if he stayed any longer then he might lose control of himself and slap Franklin across the face...
But whether they left or stayed made no difference to anyone else anyway.
After all, the recent reputation of him and his daughter has been too bad. Especially with the global situation becoming increasingly tense and sensitive, it seemed like everyone was paying attention to current events! At this time, the painting that was processed by Jasper had already been delivered to Sylvia's hands. Sylvia held the painting and looked down at it, "I can buy it myself, why do you have to give it to me?"
